Artist Statement
Our bodies are made for movement, so why not move?
Movement integrates experience. We cannot help but move ourselves, our emotional, sentient selves, when we move our bones, muscles and flesh.
Working with many different groups, I am continuously looking to create a connection, to tap into creativity and imagination so the impulse to move becomes irresistible.
I trained in Theatre at Dartington College of Arts (81-85). This course was grounded in the philosophy that the arts should be embedded in community life and available to all.
Inspired by Mary Faulkerson’s internationally renowned dance department, I specialised in dance and trained in Contact Improvisation and Anatomical Release Technique.
After graduating I began working in London with marginalised groups such as adults with learning disabilities and elderly visually impaired people. Having experienced the profound impact of dance and movement with these groups, I trained as a Dance Movement Therapist at Hertfordshire College of Art and Design (89-91).
Creative Projects
My work takes me into universities, village halls, museums and site-specific locations.
You will find a link to my CV below, and links to the projects that make up the core of my current practice below that.
My Core Projects
Sundance
Sundance is a community group offering contemporary dance and fitness classes for people over 50 in Penzance, St. Just and Pendeen, Cornwall. Dance at your own pace, laugh, be energised, make a good group of friends and feel the difference in your overall health and wellbeing.
Memory Cafe
Memory Cafe sessions build on a theme to offer movement and singing for people with dementia.
The aim is to use creativity to impact many processes at once. Sessions will stimulate cognitive function, group participation, increase mobility and coordination while having a good time.
Open The Box Arts
We create bespoke community arts engagement projects combining visual art, movement, story telling and singing.
Inner Ground Dance Company
Inner Ground Dance Company aims to stretch the boundaries of community dance for mature dancers by providing high calibre performance opportunities, regular company class and access to high-quality workshops with visiting professional dance companies.
We welcome people over 50 who are curious about contemporary dance and performance, bringing together people who are new to dance and experienced dancers.
